Definition
A B2B readiness assessment is a client-facing diagnostic that estimates how prepared an organization is to address a defined business problem. It is different from a hiring test, a personality instrument, and a product quiz because its output is a readiness band with a reasoned next action.
Method and evidence
Framework created and arithmetic rechecked on August 24, 2026. Each answer uses a 0 to 4 scale. Weighted dimension scores total 100. Boundary cases were tested at 39, 40, 64, 65, 79, and 80.
Evidence type: Reproducible five-dimension scoring model and routing test. See the publication methodology and correction path.
What should a readiness assessment measure?
Five dimensions are enough to separate curiosity from actionable readiness without making the respondent complete a long audit. Each dimension represents evidence the buyer can recognize, not a trait the author claims to infer.
| Dimension | Weight | What a strong answer demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Problem evidence | 25% | The issue is observable in data, workflow, or customer outcomes |
| Urgency | 20% | A real cost or deadline makes delay consequential |
| Ownership | 20% | A named person can coordinate the decision and implementation |
| Operating readiness | 20% | The team has usable data, access, and capacity to act |
| Buying path | 15% | The decision process and likely stakeholders are understood |
How do you calculate the readiness score?
Give each response a value from 0 to 4, calculate the average response within each dimension, divide by 4, and multiply by the dimension weight. Add the five weighted values.
Formula: total = sum of each dimension average divided by 4, multiplied by its weight. This produces a 0 to 100 result while preserving the stated weights.
| Band | Range | Meaning | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explore | 0 to 39 | The problem or decision is still being defined | Give a short diagnostic worksheet |
| Prepare | 40 to 64 | The need is visible, but a critical condition is missing | Recommend a focused preparation resource |
| Validate | 65 to 79 | The organization can test scope, stakeholders, and approach | Offer a structured discovery session |
| Act | 80 to 100 | Evidence and operating conditions support an implementation conversation | Offer a scoped consultation or booking step |
Why does the model need a critical-dimension gate?
A weighted total can conceal a fatal gap. A respondent might report extreme urgency and strong resources while admitting there is no owner. The total could still look sales-ready, even though nobody can carry the work.
Add a rule that caps the result at Prepare when either problem evidence or ownership averages below 2 out of 4. This is a transparent business rule, not a claim of statistical validation. Test the gate after testing the total score so the result text and routing remain consistent.
Worked example: a 71.25 score with a clear caveat
Suppose a respondent averages 3 for problem evidence, 4 for urgency, 2 for ownership, 3 for operating readiness, and 2 for buying path. The weighted result is 18.75 + 20 + 10 + 15 + 7.5 = 71.25. That places the organization in Validate.
Because ownership is exactly 2, the cap does not apply. The result should say that urgency and evidence are strong, while stakeholder ownership and the buying path need confirmation before a proposal. If ownership were 1.75, the same total would be capped at Prepare.
How should the personal result qualify the next step?
Lead with the band and one sentence of meaning. Then show the five dimension values, name the strongest condition and the biggest constraint, and offer one score-appropriate action. Save the overall score, band, and dimension values on the contact record so later messages do not contradict the result.
For a scored assessment on a website, the commercial action should remain optional and proportionate. A high band can reveal a booking step. A lower band can offer a guide or a later check-in. The purpose is qualified leads, not an inflated meeting count.
- Overall band and short interpretation
- Five labeled dimension values
- Strongest condition and main constraint
- Scope note explaining that answers are self-reported
- One next step matched to the band
Which software capabilities support this model?
The model needs weighted scoring, dimension variables, conditional caps, tier-specific result text, contact properties, and routing by band. A personal result page benefits from a readable chart and a text equivalent. Verify that the plan includes every required step before publishing.

Failure cases to test before publishing
Test the lowest and highest possible answers, every band boundary, a high total with weak ownership, and a respondent whose dimensions conflict. Read the result copy for each case. If two different bands produce the same recommendation, the routing logic is not yet doing useful work.
- All zeros and all fours
- Scores of 39, 40, 64, 65, 79, and 80
- High urgency with no named owner
- Strong owner with no problem evidence
- Missing answer or skipped dimension
- Every booking and email branch
