# Assessment Answer Routing: A Decision Table and 12 Tests

Choose the smallest logic operation that matches the job: route to move a respondent, reveal to show relevant content in place, calculate to derive a score, and follow up to act after submission. Write every branch as a decision table with an explicit default, saved-data rule, result rule, and downstream action. Then test every reachable path. Clever logic is not useful when it creates a dead end, deletes evidence, or sends the visible result and stored record in different directions.

## Definition

Assessment answer routing is the versioned set of rules that decides which page, question, result, or follow-up path a respondent receives from one or more answers. It is different from visibility logic, which changes what appears on the current page; scoring logic, which calculates a value; and post-submission automation, which acts on the completed record.

## Method and evidence

On October 19, 2026, we reviewed current search results and buyer questions, mapped the complete public guide inventory, and rechecked involve.me's current Answer Routing, Visibility Rules, calculator, score, editor-test, CRM, and email-workflow documentation. We modeled one synthetic readiness assessment as a directed path graph and ran twelve deterministic cases. This is a reproducible implementation method, not a hands-on product benchmark or a claim about conversion lift.

Evidence type: Four-operation logic matrix, eight-field branch contract, worked readiness flow, and twelve deterministic routing tests. See the [publication methodology](https://best-assessment-tool.com/methodology) and [correction path](https://best-assessment-tool.com/corrections).

## Choose among route, reveal, calculate, and follow up

Logic becomes easier to review when each rule has one primary responsibility. A route changes the next page. A reveal changes content on the current page. A calculation changes a value. A follow-up rule changes what happens after a completed submission. A single answer may participate in several operations, but each operation should remain visible in the specification.

## Write an eight-field branch contract

For each branch, record the rule ID, source question or field, operator, comparison value, destination, else destination, saved-data effect, and downstream result or workflow effect. Add the assessment, question, scoring, and routing versions at the model level.

Use stable answer codes in the specification even when the builder evaluates visible answer text. That lets reviewers distinguish a wording change from a rule change. If the platform requires an exact text match, treat capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and comma-separated combinations as test inputs.

## Draw the reachable path before building

Start with nodes for entry, each decision page, contact collection, calculation, every result, and finish. Draw a directed edge for every answer route and an else edge for every conditional group. A node without a path to a valid finish is a defect. A cycle needs an explicit purpose, exit, and saved-data rule.

Mark which paths skip scored questions. If a skipped question becomes zero, blank, not applicable, or excluded from the denominator, decide that before implementation. The route should never make the visible result depend on an accidental default.

## Worked example: one readiness assessment, three paths

A cybersecurity-readiness assessment asks whether the organization has a documented incident-response plan. `yes_current` routes to three evidence questions. `yes_outdated` routes to two review questions plus the evidence section. `no_plan` routes to four foundation questions. Every path returns to a shared contact step, calculation step, and result page.

The score excludes questions that were not applicable to the chosen path; it does not award zero automatically. A hard gate caps `no_plan` at the Foundation result even if other dimensions are high. The completed record stores route ID, answered question IDs, skipped-state reason, raw and normalized scores, gate state, final band, and model version. Only the final band and separately approved permission state can select a follow-up workflow.

## Apply current platform behavior accurately

involve.me currently documents Answer Routing for Multiple Choice, Image Choice, and Dropdown elements. A direct answer can continue, go to another page, restart the funnel, or finish. Routing Conditions can combine earlier answers and need an Else branch. Its documentation says a restart deletes collected answers, and adding a second data-collecting element to a page disables that page's answer routing.

Visibility Rules can show or hide elements from answers, scores, operators, ALL or ANY groups, and nested conditions. The current documentation states a limit of ten conditions and three inner-group levels, and warns that equals comparisons must match answer text exactly. These are implementation boundaries, not universal properties of assessment software.

The platform can calculate scores and outcomes, retain contact context in its native CRM, and run conditional multi-step email workflows after completion. Keep those later operations aligned with the final route and stored result rather than treating routing itself as a CRM or automation guarantee.

## Run twelve deterministic tests

Record input answers, expected pages, observed pages, saved fields, calculated result, follow-up state, and pass or fail. Use synthetic data and repeat the matrix after any logic change.

- Take every direct answer route and confirm its next page.
- Exercise every multi-condition branch and its explicit Else destination.
- Submit a missing or invalid controlling answer and confirm a recoverable validation state.
- Traverse the shortest path and verify no required evidence was skipped.
- Traverse the longest path and verify every page can reach a valid finish.
- Use Back, refresh, and resume; confirm the route and saved answers remain coherent.
- Trigger a restart and confirm the documented deletion of collected answers is intentional and visible.
- Test skipped scored questions and confirm zero, blank, not applicable, and excluded states follow the contract.
- Test one value below, at, and above every score or gate boundary reached by a branch.
- Confirm the visible result, stored contact context, export, webhook, and final band agree.
- Confirm only the final result and valid permission state can start the intended follow-up sequence.
- Rename an answer, duplicate a page, and change one route in a copy; rerun the complete matrix before publishing.

## Check progress, accessibility, and measurement

Branched paths can make a fixed page count misleading. involve.me recommends disabling its page progress and navigation controls for routing branches because respondents may not visit every page. If progress is shown, disclose a truthful range or stage and test every path. Keep instructions, labels, focus, error messages, keyboard operation, and a text-equivalent result accessible along every route.

Measure path starts, completions, and exits with declared denominators. A route with fewer pages is not automatically better; it can remove needed evidence or change who qualifies. Diagnose observed loss and result quality together.

## Preserve specialist boundaries

Hiring, certification, education, psychometric, and clinical assessments may require standardized administration, equivalent forms, fixed timing, protected item exposure, validated adaptive logic, or qualified interpretation. A general builder's routing controls do not establish fairness, validity, accessibility conformance, or clinical safety. Use specialist systems and review when the path changes a consequential decision.
